Medical Surgical Nursing Department

Aim

The aim of the Medical-Surgical Nursing department is to prepare nursing students with the knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities necessary to provide comprehensive, evidence-based, and compassionate care to adult patients in diverse medical and surgical settings.

Objectives

  • Clinical Knowledge and Skills Development: Equip students with comprehensive knowledge and skills needed to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for patients with medical and surgical conditions.
  • Patient-Centered Care: Develop the ability to provide compassionate, holistic, and culturally competent care, emphasizing patient safety and comfort throughout the care process.
  • Critical Thinking and Decision Making: Foster critical thinking and clinical reasoning abilities to make informed, evidence-based decisions for patient care in diverse medical and surgical settings.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration: Encourage effective communication and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated, efficient, and quality care delivery.
  • Ethical and Legal Standards: Instill an understanding of the ethical and legal considerations in nursing practice, including patient advocacy, confidentiality, and informed consent.
  • Health Promotion and Disease Prevention: Teach students to promote health, prevent disease, and support recovery through appropriate patient education, lifestyle modification, and post-operative care.
  • Professionalism and Leadership: Cultivate professionalism, leadership skills, and accountability in nursing practice, preparing students to take on leadership roles and advocate for improvements in healthcare.
  • Informatics and Technology: Integrate modern technology and informatics tools in medical-surgical nursing practice to enhance patient care, documentation, and clinical decision-making.
  • Research and Evidence-Based Practice: Promote the use of research findings to inform clinical practice and encourage students to engage in ongoing learning and professional development.
  • Preparation for Certification and Advanced Roles: Prepare students to meet the necessary competencies for medical-surgical nursing certification and to pursue advanced practice roles if desired.
